Wild Damask rose, raspberry and black vanilla
Rose Magnitude is Goldfield & Banks' rose seen through the Australian landscape: a pink salt lake under pastel skies, a rose the brand calls wild rather than garden-grown. It was created by Clément Marx of Robertet together with Dimitri Weber at 26% concentration. A rose this far from the classic bouquet is worth a short trial before a full 100 ml.

Fruit, spice and orris butter
The top gathers raspberry, cumin, orris butter and buckwheat. Raspberry is tart and bright, cumin warm and earthy, orris butter smooth and powdery, and buckwheat adds a toasted dryness. The rose is placed in a dry, slightly savoury frame, not a sweet one.

A rose with some wildness
Damask rose takes the centre with violet, geranium and ginger around it. Violet softens it with sugared-petal powder, geranium adds a green freshness, and ginger a bright heat. In the brand's words the rose is wild, and the heart feels more rugged than a neat bouquet.

Black vanilla and papyrus
Black vanilla, tonka bean, sandalwood and papyrus make the base. Black vanilla gives a deep, dark sweetness, tonka a warm almond-like softness, and papyrus a dry, fibrous wood note. Together they give the rose a long, soft landing with a woody grain.

How to test it
Start in autumn or winter, or on a cool spring day, and wear it on an evening with some space around you. The raspberry and cumin are the first thing to judge, so give the opening ten minutes before deciding. Keep the amount small: it is a concentrated Eau de Parfum.
Who it is for
People who like rose but find the classic bouquet too sweet or too soft, and enjoy a floral with spice, powder and wood in it. The brand calls its range gender-free, and this one is unisex. If you want a simple, fresh rose, this is not that.

What do I get in the sample?

Is this the usual kind of rose?
Not quite. Damask rose is the centre, but the notes around it give a dry, spicy, woody frame. The brand calls the rose wild, which is a useful hint at what to expect.
Is the raspberry a sweet note here?
Only slightly. The berry is sharp and bright, while cumin, ginger and buckwheat dry out the top. Real sweetness comes later from black vanilla and tonka, in a dark, soft form.
