Sospiro Basso is an Eau de Parfum that the house describes as born in the hush before a performance: deep, resonant and commanding. It opens on a single note, grapefruit, passes through mayflower, carnation and labdanum, and rests on a base of nine woody, peppery and green notes. Such a lopsided pyramid is hard to picture, and a decant lets you hear it on your own skin.

A single bright note
Grapefruit stands alone at the opening, clear and a little bitter. With no other note beside it, it acts like the quiet first bar before the music starts. It is brief, so notice it and then move on to what follows, because the scent does.

Flowers and resin
In the middle come mayflower, carnation and labdanum, a heart that is floral, lightly spicy and resinous together. Carnation brings a clove-like edge and labdanum a warm, ambery thickness. This is where the warmth and tension the brand mentions are easiest to detect.

A long, green-woody base
Nine notes share the base: sandalwood, vetiver, celery seeds, black and pink pepper, galbanum, nutmeg, guaiac wood, oakmoss and cedar. Expect a deep, dry woody structure with green, peppery sharpness and a shaded earthiness. It is most of the story, so give it time.

Autumn, winter and evenings in any season suit it. Try it over a full evening with a light hand, since so many woods and green materials develop slowly and are best judged late. Wear it a second time to see which parts return: the pepper, the carnation or the dry woods.
Who it is for
Unisex, aimed at wearers who prefer their woods dry, dark and somewhat severe over sweet, and who enjoy peppery, green sides. If you value composure and structure in a perfume above sweetness or fruit, it is worth a proper test.

What is in the decant?
Basso Eau de Parfum, filled by FragranceGems from the original bottle into a 10 ml glass spray vial and labelled by us. We are not affiliated with Sospiro, and the house has no part in the decant.
Is it sweet?
No sweet note appears in the pyramid. What warmth there is comes from labdanum, sandalwood and nutmeg, so the ending is dry, woody and slightly green. The sample shows whether that dryness suits you.
How does it develop?
From grapefruit alone to a floral, resinous heart and then a long woody base with pepper, galbanum, nutmeg and oakmoss. A full evening of wear shows the whole path.

Sospiro is the Italian word for a sigh, and the house, founded in Italy in 2011 and run from Dubai since 2022, writes each perfume like a musical score: top, heart and base as opening, development and resolution. The names follow suit, Vibrato, Basso, Mezzo, Bel Canto. A score only makes sense when it is played, and a perfume when it is worn; with 10 ml decants you can listen to several movements before you choose a bottle.
